What is Scalp Eczema?

Eczema is the name for a group of conditions that cause the skin to become red, itchy, and inflamed. Eczema is the Greek word meaning “to boil over,” which is an accurate way to describe the red, inflamed, itchy patches that are symptoms of eczema, including on the scalp.

Scientists are not sure what causes eczema; research shows factors such as genetic makeup, environmental factors, and dehydration in skin can play a role.

What Does Scalp Eczema Look Like?

It is important to remember that eczema and its symptoms are different for everyone. If you are experiencing symptoms of scalp eczema, your scalp may feel dry or tight, look red and inflamed, and feel extremely itchy. You may even notice rough patches of scaly or flaking scalp (dandruff), often seen worse in the nape. Sometimes symptoms like itching get so bad that people scratch until the scalp bleeds, which can make your eczema worse and lead to hair breakage and scalp-eczema-related hair loss.
