In this episode of Hair Loss Solutions TV™, you will discover the following:

  • What Trichotillomania is
  • The different stages of hair pulling severity
  • The research behind this common disorder

If you’ve ever felt like pulling your hair out, you are not alone. While this is a common figurative phrase, pulling your hair in a literal sense is very real, and it’s a common disorder that many people may not even realize exists.

What is Trichotillomania?

Trichotillomania, a neurobiological and behavior disorder known as “Hair Pulling Disorder,” is the repetitive pulling out of one’s hair. According to the TLC Foundation, “Trichotillomania is one of a group of behaviors known as Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), self-grooming behaviors in which individuals pull, pick, scrape, or bite their hair, skin, or nails, resulting in damage to the body.” Trichotillomania affects about 1 in 25 people, and the best way to manage this disorder is to educate yourself. While many who experience these urges feel shame and embarrassment, it is essential to spread the message that they are not alone, and there is help out there.

In the video above, Clinical Psychologist Dr. Renae Reinardy discusses this common disorder, the variations of severity and the options for people suffering from this problem that are available.

If you or someone you know has hair loss due to the pulling urges, contact us at Jeffrey Paul’s Hair and Scalp Specialists. We can help assess the problem and provide guidance as to your next steps.

Are You Protecting Your Hair While You Sleep?

Tangles and snarls and bed head – what a nightmare! While your body desperately needs sleep, one of the worst things for your hair and your hair replacement system is sleeping on it. Fortunately, I’m here to help. Watch my video above and follow these beauty tips to protect your hair before settling in for your beauty sleep:

  1. Sleep with a satin pillowcase. Whether you realize it or not, you move throughout the night and using a satin pillowcase prevents friction.
  2. Before going to bed, spray my Beautiful Hair Spray Conditioner onto hair and gently distribute with a wet brush, paddle brush, or vent brush.
  3. When you wake up, spray water onto your hair because all of the Beautiful Hair and Aquage products are reactivated with water.

How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

Have you ever wondered if it’s really necessary to wash your hair every day? This is a very common and great beauty question. And the answer might just surprise you!

In reality, you should shampoo your every other day, or less often if possible. Unless you are highly active and perspiring each day, your hair should be able to go a couple days without being shampooed. Your hair actually isn’t made to be cleaned daily. So, how do you know what’s best for you? Test it out.

When you wake up in the morning, spray my Beautiful Hair Spray Conditioner on your hair, brush through and examine how your hair looks. If your roots are a little oily, use dry shampoo to soak up some of the oil.

If you continue to stay tuned to my beauty tips, you’ll better understand what is right for you and what tips I have to keep your hair looking its best.

Giving Your Hair a Wake-Up Call

When you wake up, you may not realize it, but your hair is tangled from hours of tossing and turning on your pillow. Your hair needs a wake-up call to help get the “bed head” and the tangles out. One of the most important things you can do before stepping into the shower is to precondition your hair. By doing this preconditioning step you will help start the day for your hair with a great foundation. In this video, I walk you through the process step by step, but it’s really quite simple. Make sure to do the following:

  1. Section Hair
  2. Mix Conditioner and water into a water bottle and spritz onto hair
  3. Brush through your hair

It’s really that simple! You’ll be amazed at how much of a difference this short process will make! Be sure to check out our other beauty tips on this site as well.

Not All Hair is Equal

Did you know that not all hair is equal? As professionals, it is our job to educate you on what options are available for the best fit for you and your lifestyle. Today I want to discuss the three different types of hair my Team uses: Premium vs. Premium Plus vs. Virgin.

Our goal is to help our Guests have healthy, beautiful hair once again. But as you read above, not all hair is equal. Education is key to the success and longevity of any hair system! Having an understanding of the types of hair can help you when discussing your options with your hair professional.

Isaac Bracha, owner and president of the Hair and Compounds in Los Angeles, California, and a featured hair broker and expert in my book operates a research and development laboratory for replacement hair. He states, “…Replacement hair will best mimic its wearer’s hair if it is extremely close in diameter. Diameter affects the weight of the hair, the way it falls, and other important factors that will become obvious if there is a large discrepancy.” A hair restoration specialist can help determine the best solution for you.

For a year and a half, Kaylee was without hair and would go to school wearing a hat to hide the hair loss. Even though she was winning her battle with cancer, it was hard to feel like a normal girl without her hair.

After finding Wigs For Kids and applying for a hairpiece, Kaylee now has a beautiful head of hair that helps her feel confident again. Now a year and half clean from cancer, Kaylee is an inspiration for kids all over the world who have lost their hair to cancer or another illness.

Menopause and hair loss: “The Change” that’s often overlooked.

Ah, menopause! That natural biological process and inevitable rite of passage that all women experience at some point in their lives. And while every woman’s menopause experience is different, there are some common menopausal symptoms that cause the greatest disruption to everyday life. While hot flashes, mood swings and weight gain are expected during “the change,” many women are unaware and unprepared for the hair thinning and hair loss that can take place during this time. In fact, nearly 40 percent of women experience hair thinning during and after menopause.

For women going through menopause, the cause of hair loss is almost always related to hormonal changes. The body produces less of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone, which are the main triggers for hair growth. When the levels of progesterone and estrogen drop, hair growth slows and hair tends to become thinner. Lifestyle changes, including diet and sleeping habits, can also take a toll. For women experiencing menopause, the added anxiety of hair loss can have devastating effects on one’s self-confidence and daily outlook.
