Feed the “Root” of Hair Loss.

bigstock-The-Tree-And-Rood-9695642

We have all heard the saying, “you need to get to the root of the problem in order to find a solution.” Finding a hair loss solution is no different. When a woman comes in to see me to ask about a solution for her hair loss she is looking to find a solution that takes care of what she sees in the mirror every day. Yet, it is just as important that we also work on a solution for what is unseen and may be the root of the problem of hair loss.

Much like a tree, hair has a root called the follicle. If the follicle of the hair is not getting the right nutrients it can cause the hair to grow thinner, go dormant or even fall out. This is why maintaining a healthy diet and finding the right nutritional supplement, comprised of natural elements, can make a difference in keeping hair strong and beautiful while also maintaining hair for as long as possible.

No Hair Tangles for Sleeping Beauty!

Tangles and snarls and bed head, oh my! One of the worst things for your hair and your hair replacement system is the sleep that your body so desperately needs. Luckily, I’m here to help. Watch my video above and follow these three beauty tips, to protect your hair, before laying down for your beauty sleep:

  1. Sleep with a satin pillowcase. We move throughout the night and using a satin pillowcase prevents friction.
  2. Before going to bed, spray my Beautiful Hair Spray Conditioner onto hair and gently distribute with a wet brush, paddle brush, or vent brush.
  3. When you wake up, spray water onto your hair because all of the Beautiful Hair and Aquage products are reactivated with water.

Ask Jeffrey – “Can I Just Rinse My Hair?”

“After I work out I rinse my head, does that do any damage to my hair piece without fully performing the steps?” – Linda

JP_Ask_10_11_13

Linda, thank you for your great question. I am sure many people are asking the same question. After working out, I recommend following the “detangle” step of my Video Maintenance Training. Also, make sure to always use a shower filter when rinsing your hair to prevent against the damage caused by chlorine.

After you rinse your hair, follow-up with towel drying your hair with an absorbent Micro Fiber towel. Then use the Moisturizing & Detangling Spray Conditioner and Wet brush to comb out your hair.

You may also utilize a dry shampoo, in this type of situation, to dry the oils out of the hair prior to washing the next day. Not every dry shampoo can be used on a hair replacement system. Make sure you use one that has been tested and is approved by my salon for your hair system. I also do not recommend using the dry shampoo as a replacement for the maintenance program, but instead as an occasional add-in for situations like after working out.

I hope this answers your question! Please keep your questions coming! For more information on becoming a guest at Jeffrey Paul Salon please email or call us to set up a free private consultation or visit our guest corner for more guest specific information.

Bethany Overcame Trichotillomania

JP_BethanyBeforeAfter_10_2_13

“I feel like a completely different person. I can’t remember the last time I felt this confident. I feel like this is how I am supposed to look. They helped me look the way I am meant to look.”  -Bethany

A fabulous head of hair, a beautiful smile and confidence – that’s what you see when Bethany walks into a room. But it wasn’t always so. In fact, since she was five, Bethany has suffered from Trichotillomania – also known as hair pulling. Not just harmless hair pulling – hair pulling that results in hair loss. For Bethany that hair loss led to drastic action when she was in high school. She was so desperate to get rid of “her problem” that at one point she shaved her head; reasoning that if she didn’t have any hair, she couldn’t pull it out. Thankfully, Bethany was able to correct her situation with a hair replacement system.

We helped prepare Bethany for her hair system by carefully reviewing each step of the process – outlining options for color and style and ensuring that lifestyle and preferences were a major part of the final outcome.

Ask Jeffrey – “What is My Hair Loss From?”

“I have been having hair loss for about a year and a half now. I thought it was due to stress but it has been continuing. I have had my thyroid tested and the test came back fine. Any other thoughts on causes? I am 37 and no other women in my family have had any other issues.” – Sarah

JP_WomenThinking_9_26_13

This is a very common question, thank you Sarah.  Determining where your hair loss is coming from is a key step when it comes to understanding your hair loss. In my previous blog post, “Dis-Tress Hair Thinning and Loss,” I touched lightly on a few causes of hair thinning and loss. In this post I want to expand further on the topic.

Sarah is correct to question both stress and thyroid issues initially as the cause of her hair loss as these are two common factors. Other factors include diet and medications. If you aren’t consuming the right kinds—or enough—nutrients, your hair isn’t either. Water, iron, zinc, copper, vitamins A, B, and C, and protein are all essential for hair to grow healthy and strong.  Check out these posts for some good recommendations on healthy snacks and foods that will help strengthen hair.

Lastly, medications can be a contributing factor for hair loss. When taking medications such as oral contraceptives, chemotherapy, and blood pressure medications, each can cause hair loss when taking them and, sometimes when stopping them.

I hope this helps you to understand where your hair loss may be coming from. If you have questions about your hair loss, or other related questions please email us to set up a private and personal consultation with one of our consultation specialists.

Chlorine – Hair’s Biggest Enemy!

7.11 IMAGE Over 85% of the population in the U.S., according to the Water Quality Association, are bathing with hard water. While hard water is fine for drinking; it can cause many problems for your hair, scalp and skin. There are many elements found in hard water that can cause problems for your hair – The worst of these elements is Chlorine.

One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to combat the effects of hard water is to install a shower filtration system. A filtered shower can effectively filter out up to 99% of the chlorine and other harmful substances in the hard water and balance the PH level – leaving you with clean, fresh water to wash your hair and skin.

How Chlorine Affects Hair:
• Can cause hair to feel gummy when wet and straw-like when dry.
• Can damage the cuticle and proteins of the hair.
• Chlorine can cause hair to feel dry.
• Can cause hair to become brittle and take away shine
• Can cause air and sun to oxidize hair causing discoloration or darkening of hair color.

Chlorine not only has the above effects on hair and skin but it also attracts other minerals onto the hair, causing the worst effects of those minerals. Among those minerals are Iron, which can cause blonde hair to turn orange and cause dark hair to turn a darker tint, and Copper, which can cause blonde hair to turn greenish and also causes dryness.

Shower filters will fit on to most shower heads and are very easy to install. Many come with a multi-spray setting shower head, helping you to eliminate chlorine from your water while still enjoying the stress-reducing benefits of a relaxing shower. These filters also eliminate dirt and sediments. Installing a shower filter is a wise and easy step to take in protecting and prolonging the life and beauty of your hair or hair system!
