Does Alcohol Cause Hair Loss? Understanding the Real Connection Between Drinking and Hair Health

close-up of a man washing his hair in the shower, symbolizing healthy scalp care and prevention of hair lossWhen most people think about hair loss, alcohol doesn’t usually make the list of causes. But while alcohol itself doesn’t directly cause hair loss, the effects it has on your body — from disrupting sleep to depleting nutrients — can absolutely affect the health of your scalp and hair. Let’s explore what’s really happening beneath the surface.

1. Stress and Cortisol: The Hidden Connection

Stress is one of the most common internal triggers of hair loss. According to Harvard Health, elevated cortisol levels can push hair follicles into a resting phase — a process known as telogen effluvium — where shedding occurs more easily. When this happens repeatedly, it can lead to visible thinning across the scalp. High stress also disrupts hormone balance and scalp oil production, often resulting in increased itch, dandruff, or inflammation that further weakens hair growth.

What to Expect During a Trichological Scalp Treatment

Healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp. If you’re searching for a Trichological Scalp Treatment in Cleveland, you may be wondering what really happens during the process. Our treatments go beyond basic salon care to restore balance, improve scalp health, and protect the hair you have. Just like your skin benefits from a facial, your scalp benefits from this customized, restorative care.

But here’s what makes the difference: Trichological Scalp Treatments are not “one-size-fits-all,” nor should they be self-diagnosed. Every guest begins with a ScalpCheck®, which allows our trained team to identify the root causes of your scalp concerns and build a customized treatment protocol.

At Jeffrey Paul’s Hair & Scalp Specialists in Cleveland, we believe your journey begins with knowledge—and continues with a plan that’s unique to you.

The Problem…

If you suffer from dandruff, excessive scalp itch, hair loss or thinning and oily hair, you’re not alone. There are countless products on the market to help restore hair loss, but the root of the problem needs to be found. And this could involve the scalp.

One important element is to determine what is causing the hair loss problem to begin with. By performing a ScalpCheck®, experts can reveal the true reason and help you put those issues behind you.

In the video above, Senior Health Correspondent Monica Robins from WKYC takes you through the ScalpCheck® experience.

Is Shampooing Causing Hair Loss?

Does Shampooing Cause Hair Loss?

How often should you wash your hair? Will washing your hair every day make it fall out? Is shampooing less best? What shampoo should you use: clarifying, “low-poo” or “no-poo”? You are not the only one who has asked these questions.

We dig in to help separate the myths from the truth to set the record straight, while also helping you truly discover the health of your hair and scalp.

In this episode of Hair Loss Solutions TV™, you will discover the following:

  • What Trichotillomania is
  • The different stages of hair pulling severity
  • The research behind this common disorder

If you’ve ever felt like pulling your hair out, you are not alone. While this is a common figurative phrase, pulling your hair in a literal sense is very real, and it’s a common disorder that many people may not even realize exists.

What is Trichotillomania?

Trichotillomania, a neurobiological and behavior disorder known as “Hair Pulling Disorder,” is the repetitive pulling out of one’s hair. According to the TLC Foundation, “Trichotillomania is one of a group of behaviors known as Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), self-grooming behaviors in which individuals pull, pick, scrape, or bite their hair, skin, or nails, resulting in damage to the body.” Trichotillomania affects about 1 in 25 people, and the best way to manage this disorder is to educate yourself. While many who experience these urges feel shame and embarrassment, it is essential to spread the message that they are not alone, and there is help out there.

In the video above, Clinical Psychologist Dr. Renae Reinardy discusses this common disorder, the variations of severity and the options for people suffering from this problem that are available.

If you or someone you know has hair loss due to the pulling urges, contact us at Jeffrey Paul’s Hair and Scalp Specialists. We can help assess the problem and provide guidance as to your next steps.
