Understanding the causes of hair loss is the first step toward restoring healthy hair growth. In this section we explore the most common reasons people experience excessive shedding or thinning hair, including stress, hormonal changes, hereditary hair loss, telogen effluvium, and lifestyle factors that can disrupt the hair growth cycle. These articles help explain why hair loss occurs and when it may be a sign of a deeper scalp or follicle issue.
Historically women have been inspired by, and talented at working with beautiful fabrics to make anything from ball gowns to children’s quilts to magnificent tapestries. In today’s world there is one fabric that all women have in common, and that’s their hair. Whether it’s changing the world of science or touching lives on a daily basis I believe that all women need to take a moment to think about their hair, and how they can learn to protect and care for it as the fabric that it is.
In the video above I’ll discuss the similarities of your hair and your favorite fabrics.

When you’ve investing money into your hair, it’s important to invest the time to take care of it. One of the biggest beauty myths is that that using more product is better. This is in fact, false! And here’s why.
When washing your hair it is important to use one product, let it work its magic, and then completely rinse it off so that the next product you use can work properly.
I have created a full maintenance guide video to help walk you through the correct amount of products to use as well as the importance of rinsing the products out of your hair.

Some of us see the hairs we lose. We notice them on our clothes, in our brushes, on our pillows, or on our bathroom floors. Others aren’t sure what happened. It’s a mystery that leaves us wondering if we’ve used the right products through the years, if we’ve made a mistake with a certain styling routine or color processing, or if we have some sort of medical problem.
If you have already completed your at-home diffusion evaluation then your next step is to figure out your pattern stage (or how far your hair loss has extended), in order to find the best solution for your hair loss needs.

October is very widely recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness month, but many of the people I meet are unaware that this first week of October also marks Trichotillomania Awareness Week. Unlike Breast Cancer many people do not know what Tricotillomania is or that it affects 1 out of 50 people.
A woman’s hair is important to her. It is the frame that brings together all of the elements of her face. Hair has a language all its own. It tells the world whether you’re casual or businesslike, playful or serious. So looking down at her brush, and, for the first time, noticing strands of hair can send a woman into a panic. Immediately, she might wonder, “Am I experiencing hair loss, or merely losing a few strands?
Not sure if you’re experiencing hair loss, or merely losing a few strands here and there? This can be a very scary and confusing time, but rest assured, I’m here to help! After many years in the industry I’ve put together the following 5, telltale signs that help you determine if your hair loss is something to fret about, or not.
There’s no exact timeline as to how long a hair system will last. It varies on the way you wear and take care of your hair. A hair system will need to be replaced as the hair begins to come lose or thin in the hair system. While a few shedding hairs left on the base of a hair system is expected from the original hand tying process, there are five actions that can cause excessive hair loss, after the delivery of your system, and greatly decrease the life of your hair system.
Did you ever have a secret that you kept to yourself? A secret so private that if anyone found out you would be horrified? For many, the answer is yes.
Trichotillomania or compulsive hair pulling can be one of those secrets. My friend, Amy Burzinski, works with individuals suffering from Trichotillomania and she gave us some insight into the disorder.
Trichotillomania (TTM or “Trich”) is a disorder that causes people to pull out the hair from their scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, or any other parts of the body, resulting in noticeable bald patches. Trichotillomania is a type of body focused repetitive behavior or BFRB for short. People who have trich will describe a strong “urge” to pull. The urge can be so strong that it can almost feel like an attack- unrelenting and demanding attention before anything else can be done.
We have all heard the saying, “you need to get to the root of the problem in order to find a solution.” Finding a hair loss solution is no different. When a woman comes in to see me to ask about a solution for her hair loss she is looking to find a solution that takes care of what she sees in the mirror every day. Yet, it is just as important that we also work on a solution for what is unseen and may be the root of the problem of hair loss.
Much like a tree, hair has a root called the follicle. If the follicle of the hair is not getting the right nutrients it can cause the hair to grow thinner, go dormant or even fall out. This is why maintaining a healthy diet and finding the right nutritional supplement, comprised of natural elements, can make a difference in keeping hair strong and beautiful while also maintaining hair for as long as possible.
“I have been having hair loss for about a year and a half now. I thought it was due to stress but it has been continuing. I have had my thyroid tested and the test came back fine. Any other thoughts on causes? I am 37 and no other women in my family have had any other issues.” – Sarah
This is a very common question, thank you Sarah. Determining where your hair loss is coming from is a key step when it comes to understanding your hair loss. In my previous blog post, “Dis-Tress Hair Thinning and Loss,” I touched lightly on a few causes of hair thinning and loss. In this post I want to expand further on the topic.
Sarah is correct to question both stress and thyroid issues initially as the cause of her hair loss as these are two common factors. Other factors include diet and medications. If you aren’t consuming the right kinds—or enough—nutrients, your hair isn’t either. Water, iron, zinc, copper, vitamins A, B, and C, and protein are all essential for hair to grow healthy and strong. Check out these posts for some good recommendations on healthy snacks and foods that will help strengthen hair.
Lastly, medications can be a contributing factor for hair loss. When taking medications such as oral contraceptives, chemotherapy, and blood pressure medications, each can cause hair loss when taking them and, sometimes when stopping them.
I hope this helps you to understand where your hair loss may be coming from. If you have questions about your hair loss, or other related questions please email us to set up a private and personal consultation with one of our consultation specialists.
Each of my hair system designs are exclusive to the Jeffrey Paul Salon and are made with technologically advanced materials and proprietary blends of hair. Our hair systems are handmade in which we tie each hair in by hand selecting only the finest quality hair available. This ensures that our guests look natural and beautiful.
One of the greatest desires of our guests is to have their hair system last as long as possible. In order for us to help our guest achieve this goal it is important that they follow a well-prescribed maintenance program including: the right techniques, products, tools and procedures as prescribed by my trained hair specialists.
Because a hair system is a handmade product, natural hair shedding, from continued use, over the course of six months to a year is normal. However, there are a number of actions that can cause excessive hair loss AFTER delivery of your hair system.
One of the largest factors creating major, ongoing, irreversible hair loss in a hair system is conditioner remaining in the root area. Conditioner that is allowed to be absorbed onto the base of the hair system and gather around the root system will ultimately prevent the root system form pivoting 360 degrees allowing for hair to loosen and fall out or break off at the root.
To prevent against excessive hair loss in your hair system, conditioner MUST be thoroughly and completely rinsed out to avoid excessive hair loss in a hair system.

Dr. Robert M. Bernstein, director of the New Hair Institute in New York City and in Fort Lee, New Jersey, cites crash diets and anemia as two potential underlying factors on a long list of those that may contribute to hair loss and that should be ruled out by medical evaluation before embarking on finding the right solution. Limiting nutrients by crash dieting or dieting too severely can rob hair follicles of what they need to survive. If you are experiencing thinning or loss and have been crash dieting, change to a nutritionally sound program as quickly as you can and follow up with a nutritionist or doctor. And if you are anemic, make sure you are getting enough iron, which has a strong impact on your hair’s good health. You should certainly see your doctor or nutritionist for their recommended dosage of iron for your circumstances.
