How To Properly Clean Your Hair Replacement System

washinghair

It’s important to remember that a Hair System is an investment. By taking proper care of it, you will keep it looking natural and make it last longer. In order to do so, I highly recommend following a well-prescribed maintenance routine and one crucial part of that includes proper cleansing of your system.

Before I discuss the appropriate steps in that process, I want to bust a myth right now: washing a wig or hair replacement system less does not make it last longer.  In fact, cleaning and conditioning with the correct products and procedure will increase the life span since it lifts the oils and grime that cause hair loss and make for an unnatural look.

If you wear your hair system attached in extended wear fashion (removed by professional every 4-6 weeks) it is best to follow these video steps here.

If your hair system is worn daily (taken on and off each day), I suggest following twelve simple steps:

Adapting a Fresh, New Beauty Routine

Not all beauty routines are made equal and during this spring-cleaning season, it’s important to revamp your current beauty routine. Let’s start with the basics.

Water is a crucial part of our daily lives and beauty routines. Our skin and hair depend on it to stay healthy and moisturized. We need to use water in these routines…not just any water though. Some water that comes out of faucets contains harmful chemicals such as chlorine which can cause hair to turn a greenish tone and copper which can cause hair to have an orangish tint. Water that contains those chemicals will do more damage than good when it comes to skin and hair.  Including making hair more dry, brittle and creating more tangles. I suggest investing in a shower de-chlorinator.  For more tips on how a change in water can start your beauty routine off right…check out my video above!

Ask Jeffrey: Portraying Confidence

JP_AskStylist_4_18_14

“How can I appear more confident in my personal or professional life even when I don’t feel it?” – Lauren

Perhaps you’ve seen that woman who passes you on the sidewalk or who sits across from you at the weekly office meeting and you can’t help but think, “Wow, she sure is poised. How can I be so sure of myself like her?” Remember, to portray confidence, you must believe that you’re confident. Here are a few tips to portraying confidence:

  • Body Language: Confident people sit up straight, walk with their head held high, and aren’t afraid of eye contact.
  • Speech: When you speak with a purpose and in a relaxed tone, you immediately come off self-assured.
  • Dress: While confidence comes from the inside, the easiest way to prove it to yourself is to dress in clothing that makes you feel good (no, not sweatpants!). This doesn’t mean flashy is the go-to either. Confidence shouldn’t be mistaken for cockiness.

Now, with these tips, it’s your turn to be that all around confident person that people look at and say, “Now she’s sure of herself!”

Get Involved and Join the Cause

Going through life having to deal with hair loss can be a constant struggle, a struggle that as adults can be emotionally and physically taxing.  As taxing as it may be for adults imagine experiencing that struggle from a child’s perspective, can you imagine how daunting that would be?

My non-profit organization, Wigs For Kids, has had the opportunity to love, support and assist children who are experiencing medical related hair loss. With this opportunity, we have been blessed with an outstanding network of individuals who give their time, support, funds and services to help children look and feel themselves.

Yet in order to provide wigs to as many children in need as possible, Wigs For Kids needs to rely on generous volunteers, donations, and fundraisers. How can you help make these wishes come true? Here are three ways you can help out:

1. Donate:

It takes 20-30 ponytails to create one wig for a child. By growing and donating your hair to Wigs for Kids you can become a part of changing that child’s life.

2. Host a fundraiser:

Host a Ladies Night of Pampering with your friends!  Provide the food and drinks and even a silent auction and have donating’s go to Wigs For Kids.

3. Use Aquage/Wigs for Kids Products!

We have been lucky enough to partner with Aquage care and stylist products to create a Wigs for Kids gift pack. Support Wigs for Kids while looking beautiful with these fantastic products.

By getting involved, you’re helping to increase the help and support we can give to these kids at no cost to them. It is with your generosity that we are able to put a smile on these kids’ faces!

If you would like to learn more about Wigs For Kids and how you and your salon can get involved, please find information on their website here, or email or call me.

Ask Jeffrey – “What Will He Feel If He Touches My Wig?”

bigstock-Love-and-affection-between-a-y-44327488

I had the opportunity to write an article for Help Me 2 Stop, an organization working to bridge the gap between Trichotillomania suffers and salon professionals, and I want to share this article with my blog followers because I feel like every woman experiencing hair loss may have these same questions.

There are many special holidays and events that can be a time when many women experiencing hair loss want to hide away and not celebrate with that special someone. You ask yourself, “will he notice that I’m wearing a hairpiece,” “what will he feel when they touch my wig,” “what will his reaction be if I tell them I’m wearing a wig?”

These are all questions we contemplate each day we walk out of our homes and into a world where others never think of these things. But there are things you can do to build confidence in yourself and confidence in your true beauty.

How to Tackle Your Hair Loss: Part 1

2014 is the year, the year to tackle your hair loss and find out how you can find a solution.

Treating your hair loss starts at home. The products you use at home will change. The way you take care of your hair and even the manner in which you do many standard things in your life will change to accommodate the needs of your hair. I want you to begin to chart your course of treatment and monitor your needs in order to have the most effective outcome.

About a week before clients come in to see us at the Jeffrey Paul Salon, we have them gather and count the hair that falls out during that week. When they come in, we conduct an analysis using a microscopic video monitoring of their scalp, the follicles, the openings where hair emerges from the scalp, and other factors, in order to measure and put a value on the stage of your loss so that you can understand the steps you will need to take to alter the situation. If you collect hair you’ve lost and put it in a clear plastic baggie, daily, for a week, you can see at a glance whether you are losing more or less hair as time goes on.

Being Recognized for Digital Success

Going Digital copy copy

I am so very excited to show you how our work in digital media is being recognized as one of the top works in the industry. In the current issue of Heads Up by Aquage, they discuss how some salons are taking advantage of the digital age we live in. One salon, which they chose to feature, was my salon, the Jeffrey Paul Salon and the social platform Pinterest.

I have a variety of boards from hair replacement success stories to tips on living healthy. I couldn’t be prouder to have my salon’s name be recognized by Aquage for being one of the leaders in the digital world. If you are on Pinterest, please check out what my Pinterest page has to offer here.

How Often You Should Wash Your Hair

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRpebveZxb0&t

“How often should I shampoo my hair?” –Margo

This is a very common and great beauty question and the answer might just surprise you.

Ideally you should shampoo your every other day, or less often if possible. Unless you are very active and perspiring daily, your hair should be able to last a couple days without shampooing it.

How do you know what’s best for you? Test it out. When you wake up in the morning, spray my Beautiful Hair Spray Conditioner on your hair, brush through and examine how your hair looks. If your roots are a little oily, use dry shampoo to soak up some of the oil.

Your hair isn’t made to be cleaned daily. So go and test out how your hair lasts.

If you continue to stay tuned to my beauty tips you’ll better understand what is right for you and what tips I have to keep your hair looking its best. This includes sleeping on the right pillowcase and using the right products.

Why You Might be Using the Wrong Blow Dryer

People have always asked, “Jeffrey, what should I look for when choosing a blow dryer.” This is a question that more of us should think about when we’re making a purchase, because not all dryers are equal! I want to share with you my favorite blow dryer, and what features it has.

The new CHI touch is my favorite blow dryer and one I would recommend to anyone because it has the following features:

  • Temperature setting
  • Volume of air setting
  • Changeable nosel
  • Ionization setting

These are all important settings because the more heat you use, the less beauty your hair has. Many blow dryers do not have a temperature setting, which in return, causes many of use to over heat our hair.

Wigs For Kids Holiday Giving

Julia

The moment a child begins losing their hair can be a life changing experience. That experience touched my heart years ago when I began Wigs for Kids, and continues to touch my heart and the lives of others every single day. Working with children who have lost their hair has taught me that every child deserves to look, and feel normal.

And now I’d like to introduce you to Julia, who has shared her story so that you may havw that same experience. Julia is a 3-year-old Wigs For Kids recipient, who was diagnosed with Alopecia  Totalis, a form of hair loss resulting in the loss of all hair on her head. A smart and bubbly girl, Julia has not allowed her hair loss to get in her way. She is certainly a spirited gift from above. Receiving a hairpiece has provided a feeling of normalcy and acceptance among her peers. Julia’s hairpiece will allow her to continue to swim and go horseback riding without a fear of her hairpiece falling off.

Styling Tools to Create Your Holiday Hairstyle

Flat Iron

Having great hair for the holidays may mean styling with hot tools. But there are common mistakes we make when it comes to using curling irons and flat irons. I want you to look fabulous this holiday season, so here are three things to consider before prepping your look.

1.     Time – First, time management is a big deal. We all have places to be during this busy season, and the correct styling tools will help style your hair in less time. Tools get old. If you have had the same hot iron for years, it is time to replace it. Styling tools wear down over time, which causes them to not work as well and lead to unsatisfying results.

How Hot Water Affects How Hair Shines

JP_TempHandels_11_7_13

Click below to listen:

Not so hot! One of the bad habits many of us continue to do when washing our hair, is using hot water. Although hot water may feel good on our body in the shower, it actually causes your hair cuticles to swell. When your cuticles swell, it creates an uneven surface, the result? Your hair looks dull. Instead, rinse your hair with cold or lukewarm water to close the cuticle and create an all over shine.

No Hair Tangles for Sleeping Beauty!

Tangles and snarls and bed head, oh my! One of the worst things for your hair and your hair replacement system is the sleep that your body so desperately needs. Luckily, I’m here to help. Watch my video above and follow these three beauty tips, to protect your hair, before laying down for your beauty sleep:

  1. Sleep with a satin pillowcase. We move throughout the night and using a satin pillowcase prevents friction.
  2. Before going to bed, spray my Beautiful Hair Spray Conditioner onto hair and gently distribute with a wet brush, paddle brush, or vent brush.
  3. When you wake up, spray water onto your hair because all of the Beautiful Hair and Aquage products are reactivated with water.
