Decoding the Common Beauty Product Label

Ever wonder what those little icons on your shampoo, skin care or makeup bottles mean?  If you’ve never taken the time to understand the common beauty product label, you may just be surprised at what’s hiding inside.

While today’s shoppers are smarter and better informed about food packaging labels, many are still unaware of some of the basic symbols used in labeling cosmetics and beauty products.  Knowing what these symbols mean is just as important for consumers as understanding similar packaging information on food in the grocery aisle.

All cosmetics and personal care products sold in the United States are required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be labeled with ingredients, including botanicals and chemicals used in manufacturing.  There are also universally recognizable symbols used for package labeling that provide more specific product contents and safety information.  Symbols indicating a product’s expiration date, organic makeup or even whether a company adheres to strict animal cruelty-free standards appear on every health and beauty product you use.

It’s important to note that if a product advertised as “organic” doesn’t carry an expiration date, it’s likely not entirely organic. The FDA has distributed information about the term “organic” as it pertains to cosmetics, which is available for public view.

Making sure you know what’s inside of the product you’re considering, as well as having a basic understanding of label symbols and their meanings will help you make a more informed purchase. Here’s a short list of a few of the most common symbols on the market today; recognize any?

Pregnancy and Hair Loss: From Glow to “Oh No!”

As we mentioned in our February newsletter, we’re celebrating the pregnancy of one of our stylists, Clair. She and her fiancé are expecting a baby boy in the coming months. This got us talking about pregnancy and its effects on hair and the scalp.

Many women look forward to the “glow” of pregnancy.  During this exciting time, higher levels of hormones can cause many physiological changes – bright, shiny skin and fast growing, fuller hair.  Increased estrogen in the body extends the growth phase of hair, resulting in reduced shedding and changes in texture which can make for seemingly fuller locks.

Hair Helps Heal

Thinning tresses and hair loss can be difficult for men and women of any age. Hair loss can be caused by a variety of factors, including stress, hereditary, the result of illness or disease, or a side effect of medical treatments such as chemotherapy. Any hair loss can be traumatic and impart serious damage to one’s self-esteem.

We’ve heard it from many of our guests – their stress levels may have initially caused their hair loss, which resulted in additional strain. It’s a vicious cycle that’s extremely difficult to break. In dealing with all this added pressure, people turn to different coping mechanisms, such as overeating, staying within the confines of their home or overspending. These methods bring about their own problems and can result in even more concern for the person and their loved ones.

Is Your Shampoo Causing Hair Loss?

We all have a favorite shampoo. You know, the one that makes your hair smell like vanilla and promises shinier, thicker and healthier tresses. Maybe you chose that shampoo based on the recommendation of a hairstylist. Or, maybe you began using it because your best friend swears by it or you read that it’s your favorite celebrity’s secret to her gorgeous locks. But have you ever really read the ingredients of your shampoo and considered how they interact with your hair and your scalp?

The recent buzz around claims that certain conditioning cleansers and dry shampoos cause hair loss has many wondering if their favorite shampoo could be causing damage that can lead to hair loss, too. While those products may not be causing direct hair loss, the wrong product on the wrong hair type can certainly cause hair and scalp issues, including dreaded hair loss.

The Stressful Seasons’ Effect on Your Hair & Scalp

stressful-seasons

At Jeffrey Paul Hair Restoration Center, we know it’s been an incredibly stressful time. The time leading up to the election, and the event itself, has left a lot of people distressed and uncertain. Couple those feelings with the hustle and bustle that arrives during the upcoming holidays, and you have the potential for a lot of stressed out Americans. How is all this stress affecting your hair, and are there things that can be done to prevent hair loss?

Stress, anxiety and depression are never good for your body especially when combined with the medications that can be associated with them. When dealing with factors that contribute to hair loss, one of the biggest internal components is the medications used to treat those conditions. Drugs dealing with high blood pressure, cholesterol, mood enhancing (anti-depressants) and hormones (hormone enhancement, menopause, birth control and testosterone) can all lead or contribute to hair thinning problems.

The End Of The Itch

Alex is a firefighter who found the solution to his chronic scalp itch and excessive dandruff problem after undergoing a ScalpCheck™ analysis.

If you suffer from dandruff or excessive scalp itch, you’re hardly alone. In fact, certified trichologist Emmanuel Paul of the Jeffrey Paul Hair Restoration Center in Fairview Park insists most people have some degree of dandruff or scalp itch.

“The problem is that most leading anti-dandruff shampoos hide the root problem instead of treating it,” Emmanuel says. Although most people associate dandruff with dryness, he explains, there actually are two types of dandruff that result from dry and oily scalps.

“Washing flakes out of your hair doesn’t remove the bacteria and the scalp conditions that cause them,” he says. “The real solution is to properly treat the scalp.”

An itchy scalp and hair filled with noticeable dandruff is what caused Alex Aella, a 35-year-old firefighter, to visit the Hair Restoration Center. Alex was convinced the chronic itching that drove him crazy for almost 10 years had to do with dandruff or dryness. A series of tests using proprietary diagnostic tools proved Alex’s theory wrong. He not only had dandruff, but also had a super oily scalp.

Optimizing Hair Growth

160707_JeffreyPaul_5703Here’s how Jeffrey Paul Hair Restoration Center, helped one client address the true cause of her hair loss and get her back on the road toward healthy, beautiful hair.

The perpetual itching on her scalp was bad enough. But when Roxie started to pull menacing steel wool-sized clumps of hair out of her brush and bathtub, she made a desperate plea for help to Emmanuel Paul, a certified trichologist at the Jeffrey Paul Hair Restoration Center, in Fairview Park. As a trichologist, Emmanuel specializes in treating itchy scalps, dandruff, excessive oily scalps and hair loss.

“A few months ago, I had gone through a stressful event that coincided with a loss of hair,” recalls Roxie, a 50-something professional. “Once I got through that period, my hair loss stopped, but more recently, I had another stressful family situation and my hair started to fall out worse than ever and my scalp became unbearably itchy. This time I was really afraid, so I scheduled a hair and ScalpCheck™ to see if I could do anything about it.”

What Trichological Treatments Can Do For You

A scalp problem or hair loss cannot be solved through the use of just a shampoo or a conditioner. However, Trichology can help identify what is taking place on your scalp and through a synergy of targeted products and a serious and complete protocol, my team is  now able to fight the major causes that affect our hair and scalp condition. These include the following:

  • Anti-Dandruff Protocol – Fights persistent dry dandruff, helping those with scalp irritations, scalp tenderness, redness, and excessive itch.
  • Sebum Regulating Protocol – Purifies the scalp and frees it from excess oil production that could affect hair metabolism making hair dirty, heavy, weak and thin.

You Can’t Wash Away Dandruff

Your itchy, flakey head probably means you have dandruff, but do you really know how to eliminate it? Emmanuel Paul, of Jeffrey Paul Hair Restoration Center, has the answer.

The image on the screen reminds Mimi Creative Director Lynn Margalit of plant life in the winter. In reality, however, Lynn is viewing a 200x magnification fo Alex Aella’s scalp — a field of snowy-looking dandruff infiltrating a forest of hair. Alex, a 35-year-old firefighter and father of two, is convinced that his severely itchy head is not caused by dreaded white flakes. His head, he believes, isn’t dry enough to produce dandruff. But Emmanuel Paul, a certified trichologist at the Jeffrey Paul Hair Restoring Center, in Fairview Park, has a feeling that he’s going to find the real answer as he begins a thorough examination of Alex’s hair and scalp.

A series of tests using proprietary tools confirms his suspicion. Alex not only has dandruff, he has an extreme case of it. And, Emmanuel says, he has super oily scalp along with it.

“People associate dandruff with dryness,” Emmanuel explains.”In reality there are two types of dandruff, which come from dry as well as oily scalps. Most people have dandruff to some degree. That’s why Head and Shoulders is the biggest selling shampoo in the country.” Unfortunately, Emmanuel reveals, that popular product may hide the problem but it doesn’t fix it.

Thicker, stronger, healthier hair

I would like to introduce you to Emmanuel Paul. Emmanuel is a certified Trichologist who has been trained by the Cesare Ragazzi company out of Bologna, Italy.  Over the last year Emmanuel, together with the JPHRC team, has  introduced the Cleveland area to a new form of taking care of your hair, or more importantly your scalp.

As Emmanuel explains it, you simply can’t have flawless beautiful-looking hair without a healthy scalp underneath. Yet, because it hides below the surface, we often overlook the importance of having a healthy scalp – until problems become noticeable. A beautiful head of hair starts with a healthy scalp; this is why treating the scalp… and not just the hair is so fundamentally important.

Think of your scalp as the foundation of your house. If you have a weak foundation, no matter how beautiful you build the home sooner or later it will begin to have problems. Very similar the scalp acts as the foundation for hair to grow from. Using product on the hair to create beautiful hair only goes so far, especially if the root cause is a week scalp foundation. A properly trained Trichologist can detect where the scalp is weak or needs strengthening and thus prescribe the proper treatments that can address problems as well as optimize the overall health, growth and beauty of your hair.

Most people who experience some of the most common scalp problems (such as dandruff, psoriasis, itchiness, excessive oil, the feeling of having a sensitive scalp and/or excessive hair fall out) have either not been able to find a solution, have been told there is no solution or have been improperly advised to use a product that is designed to mask or hide the problem. If you can relate to this… you are definitely not alone. The good news is that there is a solution that gets to the root of the problem in order to once again give you the hair you want.
