Ask Jeffrey: Can Cold Weather Cause Hair Tangling?

Woman in Hat copy

I have been noticing a great deal of tangling in my nape area as well as the underside of my hair. It seems to have increased in the last few weeks. Is it possible that the cold weather is causing my hair to tangle?” Janelle V.

Janelle, thank you for your question! This is an excellent question, and one that I believe many women will benefit from.

The weather in the Cleveland area has definitely turned more frigid…Brrrrr! With that change of weather also comes a change in the clothes that we wear. During the winter months we wear heavier clothes to stay warm, but it can be these added layers that are causing the tangling and friction you are experiencing.

Sweaters, scarves, hats and jackets that are made out of wool or rougher materials are great to keep us warm; however they are also one of the leading contributors to tangles in hair. As you wear these items your hair is constantly rubbing against these materials and articles of clothing, especially in the collar area (nape area) and the underside of your hair. This constant rubbing causes friction and friction leads to tangling. This is very similar to what you can experience at night if you are not sleeping on a satin pillow case (Click Here to read more about friction caused at night).

Combine the heavier clothes and the natural dryness in the air during winter months and you have the perfect combination for dry, tangly hair.

The best way to combat against the friction, tangles and dry hair, is to

Enhance Your Shine

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87-AV9AkK58&t

Do you ever feel like your hair is just dull or really lacking shine? Don’t worry you are not alone. When speaking to women, hair with lack of shine is one of the most common problems women have with their hair. So here are two tips on how to get back that shiny hair you deserve.

1. Use the right kind of brush – A brush that is made with a combination of Mongolian Boar and bristles, will help your hair’s natural oils be able to be distributed equally and throughout each strand making your hair silky smooth.

2. Know what type of hair you have – The texture of your hair is very important when selecting products that will not only repair hair, but also help to add shine.

In the video above, watch as I demonstrate how using the right brush and the right type of product, based on your hair’s texture, will help add back the shine your hair has been lacking.

What to Take Out of Your Purse

If given the choice between healthy or unhealthy hair, you would always choose healthy; yet, you may not realize that some of the products that you regularly carry in your purse are damaging your hair.

Is there alcohol in your purse? Before you think, “no way!” you could be mistaken. Go ahead and take a look in your purse. What do you see? Women carry all sorts of items in their purses. You never know what the day may bring! Alcohol is found in perfume, styling aids and other hair products. Perfume contains a lot of alcohol, which is very drying and over time, will open the cuticle layer, increasing the chances of tangling.

Are You In The 90%?

“Jeffrey, my hair seems damaged and just does not look the way I want it to, do you think i have damaged hair?” -Ashley

This is a question I hear from my guests or people I meet, who find out that I speacialize in hair! Most people don’t realize how easy it can be to damage hair. Did you know that 9 out of every 10 customers who come in have some form of damaged hair and desperately need to restore their hair with protein? Hair could be damaged from a multitude of things – such as being curled, blow-dried, flat-ironed, color treated and more.

A protein treatment helps repair split ends, it increases the hair’s body, makes hair more manageable, increases hair’s shine, and protects hair against further damage.

With any product, it can be tricky to know the correct amount to use. Everyone’s hair is unique – from length to texture! To be sure you’re not overusing your protein treatment product (and costing yourself more money), use these tips!

Ask Jeffrey: Wet Brush

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SsOv5kxDOs

“Why should I ditch my regular comb or brush for a Wet Brush? Does it really make a difference?” – Alicia

This is a great question! Tangles are a women’s worst enemy when it comes to hair. Many of the women I talk to ask why they can’t get the tangles out of their hair or better yet how to get tangles out of their hair or hair system. One of the biggest culprits for not getting tangles out of hair is using the wrong types of brushes. Not only  will the wrong brush not get the tangles out, it could also create further damage by causing hair breakage. For a women who has thin hair or hair loss, any additional breakage to hair could be devastating. So the right brush makes all the difference.

BRUSHThe Wet Brush is my go-to detangling tool of choice. At first glance, The Wet Brush looks like an ordinary hair brush, but with just one use, you will notice a complete difference. It can be used on wet or dry hair. It quickly and painlessly detangles even the thickest, most stubborn hair. The Wet Brush’s Inteli-Flex bristle is designed to be ultra-thin and flexible, yet still have rapid recovery memory to instantly bounce back to its original form. In addition, the ball tip bristles provide a massaging action that stimulates circulation at the follicle and is a proven benefit for hair health.

So not only are you getting the tangles out, but you are also getting a scalp massage at the same time – and everyone I know loves a great scalp massage!

I tell my guests that it is most important to be using this type of brush on wet hair as hair can be very vulnerable when wet. Additionally, before going to bed each evening and/or once or twice throughout the day brushing through your hair, with the right brush, and a detangling spray will keep your hair looking good and feeling great!

How To Properly Clean Your Hair Replacement System

washinghair

It’s important to remember that a Hair System is an investment. By taking proper care of it, you will keep it looking natural and make it last longer. In order to do so, I highly recommend following a well-prescribed maintenance routine and one crucial part of that includes proper cleansing of your system.

Before I discuss the appropriate steps in that process, I want to bust a myth right now: washing a wig or hair replacement system less does not make it last longer.  In fact, cleaning and conditioning with the correct products and procedure will increase the life span since it lifts the oils and grime that cause hair loss and make for an unnatural look.

If you wear your hair system attached in extended wear fashion (removed by professional every 4-6 weeks) it is best to follow these video steps here.

If your hair system is worn daily (taken on and off each day), I suggest following twelve simple steps:

How to Tackle Your Hair Loss: Part 2

bigstock-Content-cute-blonde-drinking-a-52035331In my last blog I talked about how you can start to tackle your hair loss this year as a personal resolution for yourself. If you have begun to collect the hairs that fall out each day, then I want to discuss the next steps.

We want to evaluate various factors or your lifestyle at different times to see how problems might be progressing. You should note that hair loss is related to what happened yesterday – not today. We will likely have forgotten what might have caused it, because the loss becomes noticeable only after the events that triggered it. I encourage my clients to keep a diary or a journal of their hair loss over a ninety-day period – which represents the cycle of hair. I encourage you to do the same before you begin addressing your hair loss concerns constructively, and continue to alter.

For the same reasons, we take a two-to five-year personal history on a client in our initial consultation and create a timeline showing the correlation of events in their lives with noticed amounts of loss. When our clients see these timelines, they often say, “I didn’t realize that all of this was happening at the same time.” The main reason to do that initial assessment is to win the first half of the battle – understanding what has actually happened that brought about some of these issues.

After evaluating every aspect of your life, your hair restoration specialist should have a better idea of why you are experiencing hair loss, what steps you can take to prevent further hair loss, and what solution is a best fit for you.

If you would like to learn more about the right solution for your individual hair loss please email us to set up a private and personal consultation with one of my consultation specialists.

How Often You Should Wash Your Hair

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRpebveZxb0&t

“How often should I shampoo my hair?” –Margo

This is a very common and great beauty question and the answer might just surprise you.

Ideally you should shampoo your every other day, or less often if possible. Unless you are very active and perspiring daily, your hair should be able to last a couple days without shampooing it.

How do you know what’s best for you? Test it out. When you wake up in the morning, spray my Beautiful Hair Spray Conditioner on your hair, brush through and examine how your hair looks. If your roots are a little oily, use dry shampoo to soak up some of the oil.

Your hair isn’t made to be cleaned daily. So go and test out how your hair lasts.

If you continue to stay tuned to my beauty tips you’ll better understand what is right for you and what tips I have to keep your hair looking its best. This includes sleeping on the right pillowcase and using the right products.

Why You Might be Using the Wrong Blow Dryer

People have always asked, “Jeffrey, what should I look for when choosing a blow dryer.” This is a question that more of us should think about when we’re making a purchase, because not all dryers are equal! I want to share with you my favorite blow dryer, and what features it has.

The new CHI touch is my favorite blow dryer and one I would recommend to anyone because it has the following features:

  • Temperature setting
  • Volume of air setting
  • Changeable nosel
  • Ionization setting

These are all important settings because the more heat you use, the less beauty your hair has. Many blow dryers do not have a temperature setting, which in return, causes many of use to over heat our hair.

Styling Tools to Create Your Holiday Hairstyle

Flat Iron

Having great hair for the holidays may mean styling with hot tools. But there are common mistakes we make when it comes to using curling irons and flat irons. I want you to look fabulous this holiday season, so here are three things to consider before prepping your look.

1.     Time – First, time management is a big deal. We all have places to be during this busy season, and the correct styling tools will help style your hair in less time. Tools get old. If you have had the same hot iron for years, it is time to replace it. Styling tools wear down over time, which causes them to not work as well and lead to unsatisfying results.

How Hot Water Affects How Hair Shines

JP_TempHandels_11_7_13

Click below to listen:

Not so hot! One of the bad habits many of us continue to do when washing our hair, is using hot water. Although hot water may feel good on our body in the shower, it actually causes your hair cuticles to swell. When your cuticles swell, it creates an uneven surface, the result? Your hair looks dull. Instead, rinse your hair with cold or lukewarm water to close the cuticle and create an all over shine.

Bethany Overcame Trichotillomania

JP_BethanyBeforeAfter_10_2_13

“I feel like a completely different person. I can’t remember the last time I felt this confident. I feel like this is how I am supposed to look. They helped me look the way I am meant to look.”  -Bethany

A fabulous head of hair, a beautiful smile and confidence – that’s what you see when Bethany walks into a room. But it wasn’t always so. In fact, since she was five, Bethany has suffered from Trichotillomania – also known as hair pulling. Not just harmless hair pulling – hair pulling that results in hair loss. For Bethany that hair loss led to drastic action when she was in high school. She was so desperate to get rid of “her problem” that at one point she shaved her head; reasoning that if she didn’t have any hair, she couldn’t pull it out. Thankfully, Bethany was able to correct her situation with a hair replacement system.

We helped prepare Bethany for her hair system by carefully reviewing each step of the process – outlining options for color and style and ensuring that lifestyle and preferences were a major part of the final outcome.

Younger Looking Hair

HandinhandThis past weekend I had the great pleasure of spending time with my first granddaughter who is turning one! As I was playing with her she placed her hand in mine and I recognized how soft her baby skin was compared to mine.

Everyone knows the feel of a baby’s skin. The skin is soft, plump and filled with moisture – this is due to the skins natural occurring Sodium PCA which acts as a moisture retention agent. As an individual gets older Sodium PCA becomes less and less causing skin to become dry and tight.

Because hair has very similar characteristics to skin, when we specifically formulated our Beautiful Hair Care System one of the main ingredients we used in our Moisturizing Conditioner was Sodium PCA. This ingredient helps retain moisture in the hair. As moisture is retained, the shine of hair increase, tangles are reduced, hair is more manageable, color is deeper and richer, and best of all dryness is gone giving you the look you desire.

Women all around the world spend millions of dollars each year trying to find products that make their hair and skin look and feel younger and softer. Hair products promise to do many things but you can’t always “judge a book by its cover”… it’s more important to know what is in the products you use and why those ingredients are important to giving you the look you desire.

Wake Up Hair, The Right Way!

If you are a coffee drinker in the morning, you know what it’s like, or you’re like, when you don’t get that cup of coffee to help you wake up. Just like you, your hair needs a wake-up call to help get the “bed head” and the tangles out. One of the most important things you can do before stepping into the shower is to precondition hair. By doing this preconditioning step you will help start the day for your hair with a great foundation. In this video I walk you through the process step by step, but it’s really quite simple. Make sure to:

  1. Section Hair
  2. Mix Conditioner and water into a water bottle and sprits onto hair
  3. Brush through your hair

And that’s it! You’ll be amazed at how much of a difference this short process will make! For more beauty tips daily connect with me on:
