Ask Jeffrey – “Can I Just Rinse My Hair?”

“After I work out I rinse my head, does that do any damage to my hair piece without fully performing the steps?” – Linda

JP_Ask_10_11_13

Linda, thank you for your great question. I am sure many people are asking the same question. After working out, I recommend following the “detangle” step of my Video Maintenance Training. Also, make sure to always use a shower filter when rinsing your hair to prevent against the damage caused by chlorine.

After you rinse your hair, follow-up with towel drying your hair with an absorbent Micro Fiber towel. Then use the Moisturizing & Detangling Spray Conditioner and Wet brush to comb out your hair.

You may also utilize a dry shampoo, in this type of situation, to dry the oils out of the hair prior to washing the next day. Not every dry shampoo can be used on a hair replacement system. Make sure you use one that has been tested and is approved by my salon for your hair system. I also do not recommend using the dry shampoo as a replacement for the maintenance program, but instead as an occasional add-in for situations like after working out.

I hope this answers your question! Please keep your questions coming! For more information on becoming a guest at Jeffrey Paul Salon please email or call us to set up a free private consultation or visit our guest corner for more guest specific information.

Bethany Overcame Trichotillomania

JP_BethanyBeforeAfter_10_2_13

“I feel like a completely different person. I can’t remember the last time I felt this confident. I feel like this is how I am supposed to look. They helped me look the way I am meant to look.”  -Bethany

A fabulous head of hair, a beautiful smile and confidence – that’s what you see when Bethany walks into a room. But it wasn’t always so. In fact, since she was five, Bethany has suffered from Trichotillomania – also known as hair pulling. Not just harmless hair pulling – hair pulling that results in hair loss. For Bethany that hair loss led to drastic action when she was in high school. She was so desperate to get rid of “her problem” that at one point she shaved her head; reasoning that if she didn’t have any hair, she couldn’t pull it out. Thankfully, Bethany was able to correct her situation with a hair replacement system.

We helped prepare Bethany for her hair system by carefully reviewing each step of the process – outlining options for color and style and ensuring that lifestyle and preferences were a major part of the final outcome.

Protect Your Hair

Jeffrey Paul Restoring Beautiful Hair Conditioner

Hair needs protection! That’s why using my Beautiful Hair Spray Conditioner is so important. Towels, blow dryers, hot irons, and other environmental factors damage hair each and every day. Using my Spray Conditioner after showering not only helps to protect your hair from many damaging factors. It also detangles hair, adds moisture which allows hair to feel more soft and smooth, and reduces frizzy hair.

Here are a few tips to further protect your hair.

  1. If you must towel dry your hair, make sure to use a microfiber towel.
  2. If you need to blow dry your hair or use hot styling tools, make sure that you are using them properly. (For tips, click here).
  3. Understand the 3 T’s of your styling tools: time, temperature and technique.

If you are interested in Spray Conditioner or would like to learn more about the right solution for your individual hair loss please email us to set up a private and personal consultation with one of our consultation specialists.

Ask Jeffrey – “What is My Hair Loss From?”

“I have been having hair loss for about a year and a half now. I thought it was due to stress but it has been continuing. I have had my thyroid tested and the test came back fine. Any other thoughts on causes? I am 37 and no other women in my family have had any other issues.” – Sarah

JP_WomenThinking_9_26_13

This is a very common question, thank you Sarah.  Determining where your hair loss is coming from is a key step when it comes to understanding your hair loss. In my previous blog post, “Dis-Tress Hair Thinning and Loss,” I touched lightly on a few causes of hair thinning and loss. In this post I want to expand further on the topic.

Sarah is correct to question both stress and thyroid issues initially as the cause of her hair loss as these are two common factors. Other factors include diet and medications. If you aren’t consuming the right kinds—or enough—nutrients, your hair isn’t either. Water, iron, zinc, copper, vitamins A, B, and C, and protein are all essential for hair to grow healthy and strong.  Check out these posts for some good recommendations on healthy snacks and foods that will help strengthen hair.

Lastly, medications can be a contributing factor for hair loss. When taking medications such as oral contraceptives, chemotherapy, and blood pressure medications, each can cause hair loss when taking them and, sometimes when stopping them.

I hope this helps you to understand where your hair loss may be coming from. If you have questions about your hair loss, or other related questions please email us to set up a private and personal consultation with one of our consultation specialists.

Watch Judy’s Solution to – Women’s Hair Loss

Take a look at this video of Judy and find out why Judy says, “I feel great! I feel energetic, younger, lively and I feel like I have a new lease on life! I feel like myself again.”

At the young age of 53, Judy had already experienced hair loss twice. First when she was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer and had to endure radiation and chemotherapy. That time, she was lucky enough to have her hair grow back. Then Judy had to go through radiation and lost her hair again. Unfortunately, this time it never fully came back, and as someone working in the public eye, she was concerned that people could see her scalp.

Cause of Hair Loss in a Hair System

HairLossBrushEach of my hair system designs are exclusive to the Jeffrey Paul Salon and are made with technologically advanced materials and proprietary blends of hair. Our hair systems are handmade in which we tie each hair in by hand selecting only the finest quality hair available. This ensures that our guests look natural and beautiful.

One of the greatest desires of our guests is to have their hair system last as long as possible. In order for us to help our guest achieve this goal it is important that they follow a well-prescribed maintenance program including: the right techniques, products, tools and procedures as prescribed by my trained hair specialists.

Because a hair system is a handmade product, natural hair shedding, from continued use, over the course of six months to a year is normal. However, there are a number of actions that can cause excessive hair loss AFTER delivery of your hair system.

One of the largest factors creating major, ongoing, irreversible hair loss in a hair system is conditioner remaining in the root area. Conditioner that is allowed to be absorbed onto the base of the hair system and gather around the root system will ultimately prevent the root system form pivoting 360 degrees allowing for hair to loosen and fall out or break off at the root.

To prevent against excessive hair loss in your hair system, conditioner MUST be thoroughly and completely rinsed out to avoid excessive hair loss in a hair system.

For more information on how to properly maintain your hair system please visit our guest corner or watch my Maintenance Video. For more information on becoming one of our guests please email us to set up a private consultation.

Is Towel Drying My Hair Damaging It?

You may be damaging your hair in the worse way possible. How you ask? From the friction you create when towel drying your hair. When you dry your hair with a normal bath towel, in a rubbing fashion, the loops in that soft towel cause friction and tangles which leads to breakage and cuticle damage.  So how can you dry your hair?

Simple! By using the right micro fiber towel and the right technique for drying will leave your hair almost 80 percent dryer while still leaving enough moisture to keep hair healthy.

Watch Kristin’s Solution – To Chemotherapy Related Hair Loss

Are Cheap Hair Products Bad for Your Hair?

JP_SulfateScribbleQuestion_9_10_13“I learned a lot about hairspray from your video. What about shampoo? Are the bargain brands OK, like White Rain or Suave?” ~Joyce B.

This is an excellent question! There are two things to look for when picking a shampoo.

1. What types of ingredients are used is in the product.

2. Which ingredients are listed as the top 3-4 ingredients?

Most bargain brand products are not using high quality grade ingredients because they are expensive and they wouldn’t be able to sell their products for a “bargain”. You want to look for a shampoo that contains USP grade ingredients.  These types of ingredients are more expensive than normal ingredients because they must meet standards for strength, quality and purity. However, this also means that the ingredients are much higher in quality which allows them to deliver the best possible results for your hair. Remember, you ultimately get what you pay for.

Next, most bargain brands list water as the first ingredient which means that the product is primarily water versus cleanser. My Beautiful Hair Moisturizing Shampoo has the cleansing agent listed as the 1st ingredient. This means that the majority of the product is made to cleanse and moisturize your hair. By having the cleansing ingredient listed as the first ingredient means that you can use less product and still get the best results. This ultimately allows you to save money. Versus using a product that lists water as the first ingredient which you will need to use more of to get even close to similar results.

Check out my post on How NOT to Waste Product for an additional tip on the biggest culprit of wasted shampoo.

I hope this helps. Keep your questions coming and keep an eye out for our step-by-step Maintenance Video and Free Maintenance Package giveaway coming out later this month!

Is More Better?

JP_moreless_9_6_13

Myth – Using more product is better.

Fact – Just because something works great does not mean that using more of it will work even better. Overusing product can not only cause hair loss to your hair system but wastes product. My Beautiful Hair System is formulated with the highest grade USP ingredients in order to have the best product possible but not meaning you have to use more of it to get results.

It is also important not to use too little product because if you are not using the right amount of product you may not be getting the results you desire and tangling, matting, dryness and breakage may be occurring. It is very important to speak with your hair care professional to discuss how much product you should be using based on the length and texture of your hair.

How NOT to Waste Product

JP_Hands_9_5_13Do you ever feel like you are using endless amount of shampoo, conditioner or other hair products? You are spending a fortune on buying products only to feel like you go through them quicker and quicker.

One of the biggest culprits for wasted product is overuse due to not emulsifying product. What is emulsifying a product? That is a great question!

Most people hop in the shower grab their bottle of shampoo, squeeze it in their hands and apply it directly to their hair. The problem with this is that the product is unable to spread properly which means the individual either has one very clean section of hair or has to go back and use more product to get the rest of their hair clean.

Next time you hop in the shower and grab the bottle of shampoo or conditioner; or are styling your hair with your favorite styling aid make sure to do the following:

1. Squeeze the correct amount of product into your hands based on the length and type of hair texture.

2. Emulsify product by rubbing your hands together, as if you were trying to warm your hands up, spreading the product through your hands and fingers and also warming the product up.

3. Then using your fingers evenly spread the product through your hair.

Seems simple, but I will guarantee that not only will your hair have better results you will also save money by not wasting product!

Prevent a Sticky Situation

GlueDo you ever feel like your hair system or extensions are coming lose between services? There are a few reasons why this may happen including: changes in weather, changes in lifestyle or activity level, or hair growing faster than normal.

Trying to find a quick fix by purchasing a glue or bond that claims to work on hair or works great holding house items together, can put you and your investment in your hair into a sticky situation.  These types of quick fixes can completely destroy your hair system, burn or cause severe irritation to their scalp, and even cause damage or loss of your growing hair.

The adhesives and bonds we use are specifically and exclusively formulated for Jeffrey Paul Salon, with professional grade ingredients that my hair care professionals are thoroughly trained on in order for us to achieve the best results your hair system, your growing hair and your skin.

Bonds and glues that are not exclusively used here ultimately can cause you to spend much more money replacing your hair system. Here are a few recommendations for you, if you notice that your hair system is coming lose prior to your monthly services.

-Tack-Down Service – This services allow us to rescuer, in 15-20min, areas where you feel your hair system is slightly coming loose. All you need to do is give us a call and we can normally schedule you in for these within a day or two.

-Re-secure – One of the most important steps to my Beautiful Hair Maintenance System is to make sure to re-secure your hair system after every wash. After towel drying your hair with a Friction Free Towel, press down around the outer parameter of the hair system or extension to re-secure the attachment. This insures a more secure fit between services.

How You Can Determine Your Face Shape

Heart shapedNo two faces are the same, each and everyone of us has a unique beauty that should be framed with a gorgeous style! What style best brings out YOUR beauty? That depends on the shape of your face. Have you figured out what kind of shape your face is? Well, this might be a good idea to know and understand because it can help your appearance.

Take a head-and-shoulders photo of yourself while your hair is pulled back away from your face and hairline. Make sure the photo shows the full width of your shoulder-span to put your face shape and position into perspective. Then take a red permanent marker and draw neatly and directly along the outline of your face in the photo. Hold it next to the diagram of face shape samples to determine which face shape you have. Most of us are combinations, but this will serve as a general guide.

SquareThen examine (you can do this initially with your stylist if it makes you more comfortable) the following descriptions of which styles could be most flattering to your face shape and shoulder-span and most conducive to your lifestyle, and which colors might be most complementary to your skin tone. Use this as a basis to explore further styling options.

To give you a better idea of styles that will suit your face shape, check out my post Determine Your Face Shape.
